Climate Assessment of Vegetable Oil and Biodiesel from Camelina Grown as an Intermediate Crop in Cereal-Based Crop Rotations in Cold Climate Regions

The oilseed crop winter camelina (Camelina sativa) is attracting increasing interest for biofuel production. This study assessed the climate impacts of growing as an intermediate in northern Europe (Sweden) production vegetable oil and biofuel. Climate were analyzed using life cycle assessment (LCA), while on biodiversity eutrophication discussed. Three functional units considered: 1 ha land use, kg oil, MJ (hydrogenated HVO). results showed that dry matter yield over whole rotation was higher rotation, despite lower peas due to relay cropping with camelina. In fat more than doubled, protein fiber marginally increased, carbohydrates decreased. Higher related field operations fertilizer use associated N2O emissions, compensated by increased soil carbon accumulation return organic from additional rotation. total impact around 0.5 CO2 eq/kg when macronutrient allocation used. global warming potential 15 g eq/MJ HVO, or 27 HVO effects not included, representing 84% 71% reduction, respectively, compared fossil fuels.
